Observations/Thoughts/Trends/Musings
It seems the patent submissions/approvals are “back to normal” this quarter as I reviewed just over 150 abstracts to compile the present list. Again, the topic of “Pharmaceuticals” was very popular in this tranche of published patents. There were also many industrial patents (many of which I omitted from these results, believe it or not!). As in past surveys, there were not many patents issued in the field of agriculture or foods.
I use my own list of search terms when browsing the patent literature and have resisted the urge to depend upon anything beyond Boolean search terms. I haven’t attempted to search for patents using some sort of AI-based search to date. However, that doesn’t mean AI doesn’t help with searching. A colleague here at SwRI brought a search assistant called Research Rabbit to my attention recently and it is proving to be useful. When starting with a paper, it can help you find relevant related papers. I am certain that many of us have gotten lost down a rabbit hole of paper searches often losing site of what we were actually searching for. There is simply too much good information at our fingertips these days. Research Rabbit can keep you on track and it can even sync with literature databases like Zotero should you so desire. I am sure there are other search assistants using AI out there. Please let me know of any you’ve found and I can mention them here. Happy hunting!
Were you able to attend the last annual meeting? Bologna was wonderful. Not only was it the largest conference from an attendance standpoint, the talks, posters, and venue were all top-notch(not to mention the food...). It is encouraging to see such a strong return to form for our Controlled Release Society and I am so excited to see what the future has in store for us. That includes our own e-newsletter as the committee met in Italy and are optimistic about the upcoming year.
Until next time.
Stay safe when navigating that AI universe. Don’t let Skynet become sentient. We all know how that ends…
