Summary

We encapsulate recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) into liposome system for topical delivery. rhEGF-loaded liposomes were prepared using a high pressure homogenization (HPH) method. The mean ± standard error of particle size, ζ potential and encapsulation efficiency of the liposomes were 155.57 ± 0.76 nm, –57.92 ± 4.35 mV and 9.00 ± 0.39%, respectively. The outer shape of the liposomes from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image analysis and particle size measurement was found to be spherical, and the vesicular size was approximately 150 nm. The skin permeation and localization of rhEGF was strongly enhanced by encapsulation into a liposome system. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) image analysis revealed that the liposome system enhanced the permeation and localization of rhEGF in rat skin by facilitating entry through hair follicles.
