Summary

We present the fabrication of multifunctional alginate capsules, ones that can perform as an immunoisolatory barrier for encapsulated cell therapies and locally deliver drugs. Dexamethasone (DXM)-loaded poly(lactic-coglycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles were prepared by phase inversion nanoencapsulation (PIN). Encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release kinetics were quantified. This study culminated in the fabrication and in vivo evaluation of nanosphere-laden alginate capsules. Results indicate multifunctional cell encapsulation systems that deliver anti-inflammatory drugs at the pericapsular interface are a viable strategy for reducing the fibrotic response within the intraperitoneal space.
